What is Airflow Teeth Cleaning?

Airflow teeth cleaning, also known as stain removal or air polisher, is a cosmetic treatment. The treatment uses a controlled stream of air, water, and fine powder to remove soft plaque, biofilm, and surface stains from teeth. The procedure is ideal for removing tooth stains caused by coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco, and other highly pigmented foods.

The Airflow powder has a very small particle size, which allows it to enter spaces between the teeth, around the braces and fillings, and in awkward corners.

The Airflow procedure cleans the tooth surface and restores its natural brightness. It does not bleach the teeth or change their natural internal colour. Airflow can be used as part of routine professional teeth cleaning, periodontal maintenance and, where appropriate, cleaning around implants and orthodontic appliances. Please keep in mind that airflow is not part of routine hygiene; it is a cosmetic procedure and is not included in the routine hygiene fee.

You can enquire about having airflow during your routine hygiene procedure by ringing us on 01484422592, emailing us, or filling in the inquiry form here.

Airflow vs Teeth Whitening

If you would like to remove coffee or tea stains from teeth, the best solution is Airflow stain removal. During this procedure, small powder particles gently lift stains from the teeth, reaching awkward spaces, undercuts, and spaces between the teeth. Airflow dental cleaning does not change the colour of the teeth.  Airflow procedure may optically brighten the smile and teeth. Airflow and teeth whitening have different purposes. Teeth whitening (link here ) treatments change the colour of the tooth itself. If your main concern is coffee or tea staining, Airflow may be suitable. For naturally darker or internally discoloured teeth, professional whitening may be considered instead.

What Treatment Does Airflow Offer?

The main purpose of Airflow stain removal is to clean the tooth surface and restore your natural brightness. It does not bleach the teeth or change their natural internal colour. If staining is caused by the natural colour of the tooth, aging, or internal discolouration, teeth whitening may be more appropriate.

Airflow can be used as part of routine professional teeth cleaning, periodontal maintenance and, where appropriate, cleaning around implants and orthodontic appliances.

When is AirFlow needed?

Airflow stain removal may be recommended if you have visible staining from coffee, tea, tobacco, or wine, plaque/biofilm accumulation, orthodontic appliances, or as part of regular hygiene maintenance. It can also be useful before cosmetic treatments such as whitening when surface stains need to be removed first.

Traditional scale and polish: (also known as routine hygiene) is better suited to removing hardened calculus.
Airflow polishing: is particularly useful for biofilm and external staining. In many cases.

the two treatments work best together rather than as alternatives.

Airflow® is a professional cosmetic teeth cleaning treatment to remove stains from teeth caused by coloured foods like tea, coffee, and curries, as well as smoking or vaping. The technology used in our Huddersfield practice for Airflow uses a controlled spray of air, water, and fine powder.

Airflow® is not a tooth-whitening treatment. This technology removes only superficial stains and, on many occasions, leaves the teeth looking slightly brighter and feeling cleaner than routine hygiene, whose purpose is to remove hard stains to prevent gum problems. Airflow does not change teeth colour. This is only a stain removal procedure, not a deep clean or routine hygiene.

If you are looking for stain removal from your teeth in Huddersfield, Airflow® can be particularly effective for surface stains caused by coffee, tea, red wine, smoking, and various coloured foods.

For most patients, this air-polishing procedure for stained teeth is comfortable and requires no anesthetic. Some people may experience temporary sensitivity, which can be managed. During our dental stain removal procedures at our Huddersfield practice, we have not received any negative feedback from our patients about the procedure being painful.

This stain removal procedure is suitable for many patients with sensitive teeth, but your hygienist or dentist can adjust the treatment based on your sensitivity and oral health. You may benefit from using it before the procedure to reduce tooth sensitivity.

The length of your Airflow teeth-cleaning appointment depends on your individual case and the extent of staining. Normally, it is about thirty minutes long.

Airflow teeth polishing can be done as often as you want. Everyone’s case is different. The best way to figure out how often it is safe to do the procedure is to ask our hygiene therapist or our dentist when you come to see us.

This is mostly effective at removing stubborn dental stains and plaque. This air polishing technology is not suitable for hardened tartar (calculus), and usually it requires an additional professional clean at an extra charge for the clinical time. Our hygienist at our Huddersfield dental practice will assess what type of cleaning you need.

Yes. Airflow® is particularly good at removing external tobacco stains from the tooth surface. However, if you have been a smoker for a very long time and have never had Airflow done, it can sometimes be challenging, and some old stains may still be impossible to remove. Therefore, the next step will be teeth whitening, and the combination works really well in many cases.

Also, this airpolishing procedure cannot reverse tooth discolouration if the tooth is black and dead. You need to see our dentist to fix the black tooth with internal teeth whitening (Learn more).
