If you have developed a dental cavity, damaged your tooth, or need to replace an old filling, we use composite fillings, which are the modern standard for fillings. A dental filling repairs and fills tooth damage. At The Town Dental, we provide tooth-coloured white fillings designed to blend closely with your natural teeth.
A dental filling can repair a tooth affected by decay and help prevent the cavity from becoming larger. Fillings, also known as direct restorations, are done in one appointment. For larger defects, fillings may not be enough, and you may be advised to get a ceramic onlay or ceramic crown.
It does not matter how small or big a filling you need, a small one for the front tooth or a bigger back tooth cavity filling; our clinicians will advise the best solution in your case.
You may also need a filling if you have acid erosion from high acid intake or reflux, chipped or cracked teeth, or abrasion

Dental fillings come in different types, depending on the tooth’s location and condition
Composite fillings are tooth-coloured restorations made from a durable resin material. They are also known as white fillings because they can be matched to the natural colour of your teeth. White fillings are suitable for many types of cavity filling, front tooth filling, as well as posterior composite filling. Dental composite fillings provide a discreet alternative to silver amalgam fillings.
Ceramic fillings are usually made in the lab from high-quality ceramic and are suitable for larger defects, such as back tooth cavity filling. They typically require two appointments and are lab-made restorations.
A temporary filling (also known as a cement filling) may be placed when a tooth needs further treatment, or after emergency treatment, to protect it until the next visit. A temporary dental filling is not designed to last, so we recommend attending advised follow-up appointments.
Traditionally known as yellow alloy, gold fillings are known for their durability, especially in some countries like Germany (lasting 20–30 years), but are now rarely used because ceramics perform better and gold prices are high.
This is an old-fashioned metal alloy or silver filling. They contain metals, including mercury, and are no longer used in private dentistry due to concerns about microfractures of teeth , leakage, and poor aesthetics.
Most patients with small or medium-sized decay, mild wear, or a chip are suitable for dental fillings. If your tooth needs more extensive restoration, our clinicians will discuss this with you.

We aim to preserve as much tooth structure as possible, so we remove only the affected tissue. We remove only the damaged tissue, preserving your natural tooth.
A composite white filling is layered into the tooth-prepared cavity and adapted to the tooth structure. If ceramic material is being used. you would need a scan and would return for the fitting appointment, as it would be done in the laboratory.
The filling is contoured and polished for a smooth, lifelike finish. Treatment typically takes around 30 minutes per filling, and you can eat normally once the anaesthetic has worn off after a few hours.
After having a tooth filling, your dentist will give you specific advice based on your treatment.
If you’ve noticed your old amalgams are cracking, chipped, or simply look black, and you want a nicer smile, we can help by safely removing old amalgam fillings using protective isolation, such as a rubber dam, and high-precision suction systems.
We’ll discuss replacement options with you, including composite or ceramic restorations, depending on the clinical situation. We will combine the clinical situation with your smile’s natural beauty.

A filling takes about 30 minutes; it depends on the complexity, which tooth needs to be filled, and whether you are having a white composite filling or a root filling. Root fillings normally take longer because they are more complex.
If you had an anaesthetic for a dental filling, you should wait until it wears off , so you don't bite on your soft tissues by accident
The fillings themselves do not hurt, but removing carious tissue may hurt; therefore, you get an anaesthetic. You may also have a sensitive tooth after a filling if the decay was very deep. If you have these problems, you should seek our advice.
Yes, you can eat once the anaesthetic wears off; to be on the safe side, avoid biting your soft tissues. Because of a numbing sensation, eating after filling may be difficult; therefore, it is best to wait until you feel normal before you eat.
Normally, they may last years; however, with acid and sugar intake and inadequate oral hygiene, they may last less, and you may develop decay again.
In theory, you can vape, but we dentists do not recommend vaping or smoking because it harms your smile and your general health. Also, the stain can penetrate more easily into your white fillings.
Temporary fillings may last till your next planned dental examination or planned treatment, depending on the clinical situation. They are not meant to last long, as they are temporary.
